Optimal interpolation of sea surface temperature (SST) for year 2001

Animation of daily SST fields for the North Sea - Baltic Sea. The fields have been constructed from both in situ and satellite observations, using a 3-D multiplatform optimal interpolation software. The method uses spatially varying covariances in space and time, which have been emperically determined. In addition, the OI software accounts for individual noise levels on the different types of observations.
